Mauritius is due to become a tax fee island in 2010. Geography Mauritius is a small Indian Ocean Island lying east of Madagascar just south of the equator. The island is 45 km wide and 65 km lomng, covering an area of 1865 square kilometres. History Of volcanic origin, officially discovered in 1505 by the Portuguese navigator, Pedro Mascarenhas. On 12th March 1968 Mauritius became independent. Republic Day was proclaimed on 12th march 1992. It is a parliamentary democracy based on the British model and enjoys political stability. Population In 2005 Mauritius had an estimated population of 1.2 million which is a unique blend of different cultures, races and religions. People of European, African, Indian and Chinese origins are living together in peace and harmony. |
