About Mauritius

Geography

Mauritius is a small Indian Ocean island lies east of Madagascar just south of equator. The island is 45km in width and 65km in length, covering an area 1865 square km.

History

Of volcanic origin, officially discovered in 1505 by Portuguese navigator Pedro Mascarenhas. On 12 March 1968, Mauritius became independent. Republic day was proclaimed on 12 March 1992. It is a parliamentary democracy based on British model and enjoys political stability.

Population

In 2005, Mauritius had an estimated population of 1.2 million, which is a unique blend of different cultures, races and religions. People of European, African, Indian and Chinese origins are living together in peace and harmony.

Language

English is the official language. Most people are equally fluent in English, French and Creole. Several other languages are also spoken e.g., Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Marathi, Mandarin and Bojpoori.
